If you’re a traveller backpacking through the Southeast Asian region, there’s no better place to visit than the tiny city-state of Singapore. Situated at the southern tip of the Malay peninsula, the country is known for many things-- its nature reserves and parks, its world-class shopping centres and districts, its theme parks, and a whole host of other fun attractions and sites to discover.

But what most people don’t realise is that Singapore is still a country with a rich and proud cultural tradition and a history that dates back centuries and still influences the country to this very day. The nation may be the very picture of modernity, but it’s this past, and the way it’s influenced the present, that truly makes Singapore, well, Singapore.

Let’s dive right into its history and what makes it stand out from other countries.

A brief look into Singapore’s past
Singapore’s history dates back to thousands of years, but the country in its modern state was founded in the early 1900s as a trading port for the British Empire. Later on, it was occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and subsequently gained self-governance in the late 1900s. After a brief period of time as part of the federation of Malaysia, it became its own independent country in 1965.

Relative to other countries, Singapore may not have been here long, but it’s been able to make a name for itself after brief periods of instability. Through the people’s spirit and some guidance, the country has made a name for itself as one of Asia’s leading economies. Today, Singapore is a highly-developed country with high standards of living and is a business hub in Asia.

Singapore as a historic gem of Asia
Even while it had been establishing itself as an economic power to contend with, it has never forgotten its roots. Singapore is a proud place that boasts of some of the most beautiful heritage sites in Southeast Asia that you won’t find anywhere else.
